UNDEF PROJECT

Stakeholder consultation workshop / South-West session

On December 14, the city of Buea organized a stakeholder consultation workshop as part of the UNDEF-funded project “Fostering social cohesion among young people to prevent hate speech and political violence in Cameroon”.

Representatives of the administration, traditional authorities, religious leaders, CSOs, teachers and students came together to contribute to the project and improve the development of political analysis and peace education guides.

At the end of the workshop, a number of recommendations were put forward:
– By political parties to broadcast political speeches in the local language (pidgin, in this case) during media outings, using responsible journalism.
– By education professionals to disseminate peace messages and illustrations in the practical guide to be published as part of this project.

Other recommendations also called for training in peace education for the youngest children (nursery and elementary school), and strengthening awareness-raising and advocacy with local CSOs, for social cohesion and peace, by themselves being the first actors of change and avoiding hate speech.

Students are encouraged to use social networks responsibly, and to avoid sharing any messages of a tribal or hate nature, or involving religious activities.
