INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

Putting the peace education guide into practice

The guide to educating young people about multiculturalism, social cohesion and peace produced by WILPF Cameroon was put into practice by teachers on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Peace, 2024 edition.

Under the coordination of WILPF Cameroon and its partners, various activities were carried out in several schools across the national triangle, by teachers trained in the use of this guide developed as part of the project “Fostering social cohesion among young people to prevent hate speech and political violence in Cameroon”. To mark the day’s celebrations, these teachers taught their pupils about peace through lessons, poems, songs, educational talks, role-playing, messages of peace, sports activities and more.
On September 20 and 21, 2024, the Omnitech Bilingual Private College and the WAKO Bilingual Primary School in Bonabéri Douala hosted some of these peace education activities. They organized an educational talk on the theme of “Promoting a culture of peace”.
This exchange enabled the students to express their views on the definition and values of peace, and the dangers of hate speech. A soccer match was organized in favor of peace, a committee of student peace ambassadors was set up, patriotic songs were sung for peace in Cameroon, and sketches were performed. The minute of peace was observed with symbols such as the tree of peace and the white handkerchief. Nearly 200 students took part in these activities.
