ABOUT WILPF AND WILPF CAMEROON
The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is a women’s organization that has been working for peace, social justice and non-violence worldwide for 110 years. It is the world’s oldest women’s peace organization, founded in April 1915 in The Hague by 1136 women of different cultures and languages, who came together to say “NO” to war and all its consequences by creating a movement of women peacemakers.
The movement is credited with helping to bring an end to the First World War. WILPF has national sections on every continent, an international secretariat based in Geneva and an office in New York, which focus on the work of the United Nations. To achieve its objectives, WILPF has four key programs: Women, Peace and Security, Human Rights, Disarmament and Crisis Response. WILPF’s perspective is to prevent and address the root causes of conflict, working from a bottom-up approach.
WILPF Cameroon was officially installed as a group in January 2014, with the mission of working for a Cameroon free of violence and armed conflict, where human rights are protected and women and men have equal opportunities at local, national and international levels. The consistency of the work achieved in a year and the commitment of the members enabled the group to become a full-fledged section of WILPF in April 2015, at the Centenary Congress in The Hague.
In Cameroon, the Women, Peace and Security Agenda is being implemented thanks to successful advocacy with various stakeholders, with the adoption by the Ministry for the Promotion of Women and the Family of the National Action Plan for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and related resolutions. The architecture of WILPF Cameroon was rapidly built around other programs, notably Disarmament, Human Rights, Crisis Response through analysis of the gender dimension in conflicts, Environment and the consolidation of a youth movement (Young WILPF Cameroon) to ensure intergenerational continuity.
At the level of the African region, with the support of the Swedish section, WILPF Cameroon has become an example for other sections and groups through the supervision and provision of technical support materialized by the coaching of several other groups that have become sections. Among other reasons, WILPF Cameroon has organized two regional conferences since its installation in 2014. Also, thanks to her hard work, she has had the privilege of coordinating the Africa region from 2018 to 2022 under the aegis of the President of the Cameroon section.
ABOUT THE NEED FOR COMMUNICATIONS EXPERTISE
Seen internationally, WILPF Cameroon is a source of inspiration for the work of WILPF in general. Indeed, WILPF Cameroon shares at international and even United Nations level the real experiences of women and young people in communities to influence decision-making processes and drive change at local level through the decisions taken. The success of this deployment is, among other reasons, the justification for WILPF Cameroon’s selection to co-host the WILPF International Congress in 2026.
This is a key event for the organization at international level. To this end, WILPF Cameroon will be carrying out a number of actions in the run-up to the event, as well as deploying a strong presence in the field during and after the congress. Unfortunately, the actions carried out to date have not been capitalized on to their full potential, due to the insufficient structuring of the communications department. WILPF Cameroon needs the expertise of a development communications consultant to successfully carry out its activities and organize the international congress from a communications point of view.
